Hidden Gems Episode 4 | La Boum – Song Jieun

Hidden Gems is a series where I share my favorite b-sides every wednesday. In Hidden Gems we discover new b-sides that deserve some love and appreciation. I already have a long list of b-sides, but if there is a b-side you want me to check out you are more than welcome to comment on the post and it’s much appreciated.

The week of Hidden Gems we are going to look at an older song by Song Jieun (a former member of the group SECRET). La Boum is a song that I recently discovered, and the reason for the discovery is that I bought the album so I had to listen to the whole album. I’m the kind of person that needs to listen to the whole album when buying them.

Background: Song Jieun was a member of the disbanded group SECRET which was under TS Ent. A company notoriously known for being an absolutely awful and garbage company, being sued and multiple legal battles by its former idols.

La Boum was released in the Jieun’s 1st mini album 25 (스물 다섯) in october 2014, and the song is about falling in love and the celebration of getting together.

There is something about the cute and sassy elements that makes the song extremely fun to listen to. I’m not a huge fan of breakdance/beat drop sections, but this one is decent. It’s clearly an old beat drop so it gives some kind of nostalgia.

Is it title track worthy?
La Boum is a great song and I absolutely love it, but it’s kind of flat and lacks the dynamic that the competitor Twenty-Five has. Twenty-Five as the title track was definitely the right decision, it’s an amazing song and everything else is great, the concept is good and fits Jieun well.
